Becoming an Image Alchemist

about Mel

I like the winding way of it all...

When I was a kid, I wanted to be a marine biologist (loved animals and the ocean, still do). By the time I enrolled in college, I thought I'd be a nurse. Life dealt some dark cards during nursing school and by the time I found my way out of the abyss I was standing in front of the Dean of Art Department trying to convince her that I was an artist. She didn't believe me, but she let me change my major on paper anyway. Three years later, I skipped graduation, snagged that art degree, and ran.

I traveled a hemisphere away to an incredible, little town in a rural part of the Limpopo province in South Africa. I thought I'd teach English and "see the world." I will have to save this particular chapter of my path for another time, but what you need to know for this piece of the story at least, is that many of my perspectives and world views shifted in substantial ways during this short period of my life. I learned much about myself and the person that I wanted to become.

Which brings us back to the United states, but not to the small town in Kansas that raised me. I showed up in San Francisco with a backpack, a duffle of clothes, and $100 in my pocket. (Not technically pocket, cuz debit cards and wallets, but it just doesn't land the same in story telling does it?) Knowing teaching was no longer in the cards for me, I took the first job I could find. This is where I parted ways with Art entirely in most ways, but don't worry, I find her again eventually.

Why the Bay? Would you believe I followed a great love? Cuz I did, truly. That human is my life partner still, and will remain my truest love until the end of (my) time. That love has inspired so much creativity and exploration, we've been through so many chapters together now. An absolute favorite adventure that we've shared was our first time visiting gorgeous Marrakech, Morocco in December 2019. Ten-year-old me would never have imagined it would be possible to see so many beautiful places, and now I utilize images from my travels to create badass designs.

We're on to more places and memory making, but I thought it might be nice to share a few highlights from a favorite chapter that was so beautifully captured, while also sharing a bit about myself with you.
