Choosing Your Wardrobe: 10 Things to Consider

tips & how-to's

What the hell do I wear for my upcoming session?

First, and most important, RULE #1... WEAR WHATEVER THE FUCK YOU WANT.

Now, that being said, some folks still need a little direction to help them choose what clothing to wear for a photo session. Here are 10 things you *could* consider to help you make your wardrobe decisions for an upcoming engagement, portrait, or family session.

Please, take what you like, leave what you don't.

Things to consider...

  • Some say to consider location, and dress accordingly. I personally feel what's more important is the theme or overall vibe and feel you are hoping to achieve in your images. Can you wear hiking boots on a mountain, obviously! Especially if you love hiking! But you could also pose in a ballgown or fancy suit on that mountain to create an epic or enchanting feeling. Your theme should be a reflection of you, as traditional or as outside the box as you like! Once you know your theme, the wardrobe choices become more clear.

  • The next most important thing, in my opinion, is comfort level. The best images will happen when you feel good about how you look and feel. Experimenting with a new look weeks or months prior to a photoshoot is a sure fire way to feel more confident by the time you step in front of the lens. If you tend to wear the same items, you can do a slightly jazzed up version of your daily look by adding a few extra layer options or accessories. The point here is choose things you feel comfortable in, so that you LOOK comfortable in your photos.
  • A mini tip: ask a loved one to help you out and put on a little fashion show in advance of your photoshoot. throw on music, do this when you are feeling good and with someone who will hype you up to pick out your clothes!

A few things to avoid... sort of

  • Some loud patterns and graphics can be distracting, so I generally advise folks to steer clear of them if they are after a timeless aesthetic. HOWEVER, if this is your vibe, you love a bold stripe or a floral, if it's a staple part of your aesthetic or you design your own line of graphic tees, then HECK YES, let's showcase what you love!

  • We've all heard that dreaded phrase "too matchy-matchy," and how it should be avoided. I agree, BUT I think there are plenty of exceptions to this rule. You can do a monochromatic look, like all black for example, if you incorporate enough variety. In the images above you can see how an all black look works well in the woodland location because there is plenty of variety in the textures and shades of black in the shoes, clothing and accessories. In the image below, you can see how the couple chose an all blue look that also achieves a cohesive appearance without being overly "matchy-matchy" as well.

The "little" things...

  • Accessories can be a great way to add more dimension and texture into portraits, but be sure they are adding to the overall theme that you chose (remember? that was the first point!) If you are ultra glam, stick with it and go ham! If you have an every day jewelry look that you love and trust, go with it! Hats are your thing? Bring one or two along with you on shoot day to add your own flair.
  • Again, I will take the chance to emphasize that if you want to try out something a little new, try on and experiment a few weeks prior to your photoshoot to ensure you are comfortable and confident!

  • You cannot go wrong with sentimental pieces. A borrowed set of cufflinks from grandpa, the silk scarf you picked out together in Paris, the band tee from your first concert together... the possibilities are unique to you and your story! Be sure to tell your photographer about these baubles so we can be sure to feature them.

  • Hair + makeup. I'm going to sound like a broken record, but just like my advice for wardrobe, experimenting and practicing prior will be worth it. Whether you are DIY-ing your H+MU or hiring a professional, practice with any new-to-you styles well in advance.

Finishing touches...

  • Pack lite, but pack ahead! Pack a tag-along bag with some basics like a water bottle, any touch up makeup you might want, jacket, your hats or other props that you think will help tell your story visually. Don’t go overboard, you don’t want to be lugging a ton of stuff, but being prepared will help put you at ease.

  • Organizing your outfits and tag-along bag the night before your shoot, hang your clothes and place your bag by the door. This may seem too obvious, but trust me, it will make you sleep a bit easier.

  • My last tip, and this one is probably my favorite... Plan a "date" around your photoshoot. Grab a treat beforehand, or make a dinner reservation for after, get yourselves jazzed up for the reward.

When clients book with me, I have more questions and prompts to help decide everything from wardrobe to location. We will tell your story together, with as little or as much support as you need.

Now, a little treat for you...
