We don't celebrate ourselves enough in this life...
And by "we" I am generally referring to those of us who were raised by our families and societies as girls. We femme presenting folks, who seemingly only merit celebration if we get married to a man or push out a child for a man. Now, don't get me wrong, those who choose to marry (I'm married to a man btw) and have kids, that is so valid if that's what you'd like to do. Let's be real, it's what's expected. So if we don't necessarily deliver on those expectations in such a way, we end up with fewer to no celebrations, no photographs for scrapbooks, you get where I'm going here?
What I'm referring to, are all of the other amazing and incredible things that WE do that are overlooked, disregarded as unimportant. For example, I had the honor of meeting these two beautiful humans this summer. M reached out to me, their best friend U lives several U.S. states away and they make an effort to see each other once per year. They take turns flying to one another, planning the fun, and meeting up for a week full of catching up and friendship adventures! They decided to document this year's trip in a new way, so they hired me, Hello Magnolia, to join in the excitement!
I immediately said Yes, Absolutely!
I cannot tell you how quickly I jumped on this project, it invigorated me, inspired me, and more than anything, it just felt like a giant refreshing breath of salty sea air! Listen, I adore photographing engagements, children, and everything you'd expect someone to hire a photographer for, I LOVE my clients and I LOVE taking photographs, full stop. I think what I'm getting at is, don't be afraid to document something just because it doesn't necessarily fit into a neat box of societal normalcy. What the hell does "normal" even mean these days really? Be like M & U, capture the moments, do your own thing, and celebrate being YOU!
